How to Pray Fajr Prayer — Step by Step
Before you begin, make sure you have performed Wudu (ablution). If you need a reminder of the steps, our Namaz Guide covers Wudu and preparation in detail. Once you are in a state of purity, face the Qiblah (direction of the Kaaba) and begin.
Step 1 — Pray the 2 Sunnah Rakats First
Always start Fajr with the 2 Sunnah rakats before the Fard. Here is the complete method:
Rakat 1:
- Make your Niyyah (intention) silently in your heart: "I intend to pray 2 rakats Sunnah of Fajr for the sake of Allah, facing the Qiblah."
- Raise both hands to your earlobes and say Allahu Akbar (Takbir al-Ihram) — this begins the prayer.
- Fold your hands (right over left) on your chest and recite Thana (Subhanakal-Lahumma...) silently.
- Recite Surah Al-Fatiha followed by any short Surah (e.g., Surah Al-Ikhlas).
- Say Allahu Akbar and go into Ruku — bow with your back straight, hands on knees. Recite Subhana Rabbiyal Azim three times.
- Rise from Ruku saying Sami Allahu liman hamidah, then Rabbana lakal hamd.
- Say Allahu Akbar and go into Sujood (prostration). Recite Subhana Rabbiyal A'la three times.
- Sit up briefly (Jalsa), then go into a second Sujood in the same way.
- Rise for Rakat 2.
Rakat 2:
- Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and another short Surah.
- Perform Ruku and two Sujoods as in Rakat 1.
- After the second Sujood, sit in the Tashahhud position.
- Recite At-Tahiyyat fully.
- Then recite Durood Ibrahim and Dua-e-Maasura.
- End with Salam — turn your face to the right saying Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah, then to the left.
Your 2 Sunnah rakats are now complete.
Step 2 — Pray the 2 Fard Rakats
The 2 Fard rakats of Fajr follow the exact same method as the Sunnah, with one important difference in your Niyyah:
"I intend to pray 2 rakats Fard of Fajr for the sake of Allah, facing the Qiblah."

Tasbih: Say Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, Allahu Akbar 34 times.
Dua for Protection: Allahumma ajirni minan-naar (O Allah, protect me from the Fire) — recite 7 times after Fajr and Maghrib.
Ayat al-Kursi — recite once after every Fard prayer.
